![]() All you need was money and cameras, and someone saying, ‘Action!’” (314). Filmmaking, as they well knew, was easy enough. They planned, according to Philip Norman, to “make a film unhampered by Walter Shenson, Dick Lester, and all the petty restraints which had made Help! and A Hard Day’s Night ultimately tedious and disappointing. The Beatles hoped that this “organic” approach to the medium would improve upon their previous filmmaking experiences. ![]() However “mapped” out the film’s structure was, the group still had no intention of following any rigid guidelines or “rules” of filmmaking during production. If somebody wanted to do something we hadn’t planned, they went ahead. Lennon also remembered plotting the film’s structure: “We knew most of the scenes we wanted to include but we bent our ideas to fit the people concerned, once we got to know our cast. It was a case of: ‘We can have a song here, and a dream sequence there,’ and so on. “They drew a circle, and then marked it off like the spokes on a wheel. John’s Wood,” recalled Neil Aspinall in The Beatles Anthology. “Paul and John sat down in Paul’s place in St. As free form as this concept sounds (or may appear upon viewing the final product), the project was in fact partially outlined, to a certain extent at least. McCartney’s idea for the Beatles’ film was simply to fill a colorful bus with assorted actors, friends, and oddballs (much like the actual Pranksters), ride out to the English countryside, and film whatever happened. The real-world inspiration for Magical Mystery Tour was, of course, Ken Kesey’s Merry Pranksters who were, according to Philip Norman in Shout! The Beatles in Their Generation (New York: Fireside, 1981), “an American hippy (sic) troupe which, two years earlier had journeyed by bus through the Californian backwoods, buoyed up by LSD diluted into thirst-quenching Kool-Aid” (313). McCartney had developed the basic concept of the film with the help of longtime Beatles’ roadie Mal Evans. The “Magical Mystery Tour” album/soundtrack. “It could have been mine…we were all in on it – but a lot of the material at that time could have been my idea, because I was coming up with a lot of concepts” (120). “I’m not sure whose idea Magical Mystery Tour was,” he states in The Beatles Anthology (San Francisco, CA: Chronicle Books, 2000). Having assumed a sort of defacto leadership role within the group following the loss of Epstein, McCartney suggested the musical, fantasy film he had concocted as their next project. However, when it became clear that the track was not appropriate for that project, it was shelved and quietly forgotten until the Beatles convened in September 1967 to discuss how to proceed with the business of being the Beatles. Paul McCartney had originally written the “Magical Mystery Tour” song for inclusion on the Sgt. Distancing themselves from their public image seems to be precisely what the Beatles had in mind for their next film project as well. Like the group, he had also hoped to find a vehicle wherein the Beatles would not have to play themselves (as they had in their earlier films) but rather, as noted in The Beatles at the Movies, “four characters who look, think and talk like the Beatles but are different characters” (92). It is interesting to note that just prior to the production of Magical Mystery Tour, Walter Shenson (the producer of the two previous Beatle films – A Hard Day’s Night and Help!) had been actively searching for a third film project for the band. ![]() The four Beatles planned to make their new film entirely on their own free from the studio system, the producers, the directors, or anyone else that might hinder the creative processes or perpetuate the mop top image that their previous movies had ingrained in the public consciousness. Unfortunately, as Beatles’ producer George Martin explains in Roy Carr’s The Beatles at the Movies (New York: HarperPerennial, 1996), things did not turn out that way and “if the Beatles’ professional career were to be plotted on a graph, Magical Mystery Tour was definitely a dip” (113). Or, at least that was how they envisioned it. It would be an extravagant film, every bit as colorful, interesting, and original as their music. ![]() Then, in early September, just a few weeks after the death of their manager, Brian Epstein (the victim of an accidental overdose of prescription-drugs on August 27, 1967), the Beatles began work on their next project – a film for television entitled Magical Mystery Tour. They were, by all accounts, perceived as infallible. Since the record’s June release, the group had become cultural and musical icons and had attained a form of rock sainthood. ![]() ![]() While the identities of most of Vivaldi’s pupils at the Pietà are unknown, he immortalized a few by writing their names in his scores. The Harpsichord, Spinnet, Lute and Base Violin, are instruments most agreeable to the Ladies: There are some others that really are unbecoming to the Fair Sex as the flute, Violin and Hautboy the last of which is too Manlike and would look indecent in a Woman’s Mouth and the flute is very improper, as taking away too much of the juices, which are otherwise more necessarily employ’d, to promote the Appetite, and assist Digestion. Contemporary accounts by male writers never fail to comment on the musicians, such as this cringe-worthy observation by the British choreographer, John Essex. Performances at the Pietà and its rival ospedali became a must-see for visitors to Venice, and not just for the music. With his reputation grew the status of the Pietà, which elevated him to maestro di coro, allowing him to focus more on composing and conducting. More than once his annual contract was terminated and reinstated by the board between 17. After a brief stint as a priest, Vivaldi was first hired by the Pietà as a maestro di violino at age 25 in 1703. This minimized the number of male teachers, contracted one year at a time, in the all-female environment. Music education at the Venetian ospedali was largely based on a peer-teaching system, in which an accomplished senior student known as a figlia di cori ( cori meaning musical establishment as a whole, not just singers) would be assigned to teach younger students. To this day, a marble plaque embedded in the wall of a later church of Santa Maria della Pietà invokes the warning of Pope Paul III in 1548 of dire consequences for parents abandoning children there if they could afford to raise them. ![]() Founded in 1336, the Pietà was unique in being both single-sex and accepting infant girls born both in and out of wedlock, provided the child was small enough to fit in a box near the door. Aside from his forty-six operas, most of his five hundred-plus concertos, ninety solo sonatas, and dozens of choral works resulted from his thirty-year association as teacher, conductor, and composer for the orphans in the Ospedale della Pietà, one of four such institutions with prominent musical establishments in Venice. The vast majority of Antonio Vivaldi’s prolific compositions resulted from his various responsibilities in his long teaching career. ![]() ![]() ![]() Applied Phlebotinum: The Wicked Witch of the West's Golden Cap, which she uses to control the Winged Monkeys.Who knows how much longer he would have been stuck there had Dorothy and the Scarecrow not encountered him? While the basic plot structure seems close, the movie made several deviations and edits – for instance the film's having only one Good Witch instead of two, the complete omission of the Dénouement journey after the defeat of the Wicked Witch, and most significantly the ending (the film implies Dorothy's adventure is All Just a Dream, while in the book it's most definitely real). The book has received quite a few adaptations since its publication, with the 1939 movie musical The Wizard of Oz becoming the most famous version of the story. The Witch, after seeing Dorothy and her friends heading towards her lair, enslaves the girl, and schemes to claim the magical silver shoes for herself. Together they travel to the Emerald City and ask for help from the Wizard, who orders them to first kill the aptly-named Wicked Witch of the West. So she gives Dorothy the wicked witch's silver shoes, kisses her on the forehead for magical protection, and sends her off to the capital - the Emerald City - to ask the Wizard who rules there for his advice.Īlong the way, Dorothy meets the Scarecrow (who wants a brain), the Tin Woodman (who misses his heart), and the Cowardly Lion (who wishes he had courage). Regardless, actress Shirley Eaton had doctors standing by when she wore the paint, and was not affected at all by the scene. However, body paint could still keep you from sweating (which would overheat your body), and could be toxic if you wear it for too long, so covering yourself in it isn't the best idea. Of course, we now know that people don't breathe through their skin so as long as you're breathing through your mouth or nose, you won't suffocate. ![]() Since this woman was painted for real and people thought that would kill someone, it was enough for viewers to conclude that she had died when she slipped out of public view. Knowing this, dancers back then would leave a small patch of their skin exposed so as to make breathing possible. In those days, some people believed that the body breathed through the skin, which would mean that someone who was totally covered in paint would suffocate. Instead, it was a bird, which can be seen much more clearly in the remastered DVD release of the film: ![]() And if the film staff were "covering it up," they wouldn't have been so cheap as to not get another take of the scene. Even in 1939, it would have been physically impossible for someone to commit that act and not have a single person notice. Nobody committed suicide on the set of The Wizard of Oz. That doesn't even take into account the fact that the Munchkins weren't even on the set when this scene was recorded. Even if it somehow slipped by them, the post-production team would have seen the hanging when they were editing the film. First, filming a movie requires dozens of people at any given time, who would have surely noticed someone who was hanging on the set. This is the kind of hoax that seems believable when you get caught up in excitement and view the slow-mo video, but think about it for just a minute. Once thought to be a crew member accidentally stuck on-screen, the legend eventually evolved into its current form: a Munchkin extra, distraught from unrequited love, decided to end his life on the movie's set. ![]() ![]() ![]() The investment tracking has been full of bugs for years now, but the spending tracking was pretty solid until about a year ago. If want to use this to continuously monitor your spending, I would recommend downloading their smartphone or table apps to make it easier to check in. If you’d like to set a spending target on certain categories like Restaurants or Shopping, then the Mint “Budget” section is nice because it can track your spending against the limits for you and even send an e-mail/text alert if you exceed it. From here, I can edit individual transaction categories, see quickly if something is out of whack, and compare spending across different time periods. That’s where the nifty charts live! I usually start with the “Spending by Category” pie chart. Out of all the top-level sections, I spend most of my time in “Trends”. This cleans up the data and allows me to focus on the spending. I prefer to have Mint ignore all my retirement account contributions, interbank funds transfers, and estimated tax payments. For this, use the “Exclude from Mint” category. There are some things that Mint doesn’t handle that well, or you simply don’t want Mint to track.
